Traditional Kyoto Style Book Making (2H)
What you’ll do
1. Select book cover
(you can choose from our collection of old kimono textile / old cloth textile / varieties of fabrics)
2. Stitch the interior pages of the book by hand
3. Cut the edge of the book to size
4. Measure the book cover & other materials
5. Set and arrange all papers and make book cover
6. Assemble the interior of the book and book cover
7. Press by hot iron with candle
8. Use pressing tools to press book
9. Glue on the cover of the book
Other things to note
1. If you are book lovers, we are happy to offer another class FOR BOOK LOVERS, class including FULL experience like Letter Hot Stamping (please check THIS out)
2.If you’d try Japanese Original book style, we reommend STAMPBOOK class (please check THIS out)
3. We welcome families. For children under 5 years old, our standard bookmaking class might be a challenge. In that case, we recommend KIMONO SKETCHBOOK class (please check THIS out)
Letter Hot Stamping (Extra 1 Hour) for Traditional Kyoto Style Book Making
What you’ll do
After completing Traditional Kyoto Style Book Making, you will experience ”Letter Hot Stamping“
1. Choose one or two words from Name/ Date/ Kyoto, or one line of your expression like poem or philosophy
2. Choose letter style from letter presses (Western or Japanese/ Kanji – old Chinese characters)
3. Design to set letter press on the back page of your book cover
4. Practice the technique of hot stamping several times
5. Try to hot stamp with golden leaf (silver / other colors)
Other things to note
1. If you want to add Letter Hot Stamping experience, select “1” from the quantity selection box in “Extras” section which appears as you continue booking Traditional Kyoto Style Book Making 2H. That way, all the participants in your group will enjoy 1h extra Letter Hot Stamping after making your books.
2. This extra 1 hour experience is best suited for adults and families with kids over 13 yrs. old.
Kyoto Kimono Sketchbook Making (2.5H)
What you’ll do
* All materials are from local craftsmen
* Best suited for family
* 1/2 price for kids !
Session 1 ”Preparation of Materials”
1. Preceded by introduction of Kyoto’s Nishijin District, town of fabric handicraftsmen, we will show you 5-min interview film
2. Picking and arranging threads over Washi (Japanese traditional handmade paper) as you like
3. Making book cover following the instruction by dyeing artist
Session 2 ”Sketchbook Making”
1. Stitching interior pages of the sketchbook
2. Trimming the edges of the interior pages
3. Making front cover of the sketchbook
4. Assembling the interior pages and front cover, using glue
5. Setting glue using hot iron and wooden vice
Stamp-Book Making (2H)
What you’ll do
Session 1 ”Making Gushuincho Stamp Book”
1. Choosing one of the fabrics for front cover (enjoy our beautiful collection of vintage Kimono fabrics)
2. Making the interior pages with Washi papers (you will learn special brushing & gluing techniques)
3. Trimming front cover and other materials to adjust sizes
Session 2 ”Letter Hot Stamping”
1. Choose one or two words from Name/ Date/ Kyoto, or one line of your expression like poem or philosophy
2. Choose letter style from letter presses (Western or Japanese/ Kanji – old Chinese characters)
3. Design to set letter press on the back page of your book cover

Session 3 “Going Outside to Explore Neighborhood of Workshop“
About 5-min walking to the shrine to get the first stamp from a shrine priest or a temple abbot
Other thing to note
We recommend joining this class before visiting temples & shrines if you plan to get stumps from them
